bhutan Road Trip
Monasteries & Festivals
In 2010, we set off on a road trip across Bhutan, a journey through dramatic landscapes, sacred monasteries, and vibrant cultural traditions.
Our route took us across the country, from Haa Valley and the high Chelela Pass — the highest point on the Dantak roads — to Trongsa and onward to Bumthang, the spiritual heart of Bhutan. We explored Punakha with its stunning riverside dzong, and of course, hiked to Taktsang, the legendary “Tiger’s Nest” Monastery clinging to the cliffside.
Along the way, we were fortunate to witness two of Bhutan’s most celebrated festivals: the Thimphu Tshechu and the Bumthang Tshechu. These colorful gatherings filled the courtyards with masked dancers, monks, and villagers dressed in their finest ghos and kiras, offering a rare glimpse into Bhutanese spiritual life.
Our journey ended in Thimphu, the country’s capital, where modern life and tradition coexist in perfect balance. This road trip through Bhutan was more than just travel — it was an immersion into a living culture set against the backdrop of the Himalayas.
